Honoring Our Founding Legend: The Backbone of 266 Stick Curling Club
Our 266 Stick Curling Club owes its very existence to our esteemed founder, a beacon of dedication and sacrifice. His unwavering commitment and years of tireless effort have laid the groundwork for the vibrant community we cherish today. We stand indebted to his vision, leadership, and unyielding passion, which have shaped our club into the thriving hub it is
The Story of the 266 Stick Curling League
The 266 Stick Curling League began from a chance encounter and a shared passion for curling. In 2009, Bill Martin and George Achtymichuk were in Manitoba for a family function when they discovered that a Canadian two-person stick championship was happening in Winnipeg. Both skilled in stick curling, they decided to participate and remarkably won the Canadian two-person championship that year.

Inspired by their success, George and Gord decided to start a two-person stick league at the Highland in Regina in October 2009. With only 10-12 teams initially, the league began modestly but has grown impressively every year. By 2021, 86 teams were competing weekly, and as of 2023:

-
We played 42 games per week during our most recent set of matches.
-
A total of 71 different team combinations participated in the schedule, with some teams playing more than once a week.
-
Among these 71 teams, 37 are male/male, 16 are female/female, and 18 are mixed female/male.
-
The league boasts 63 male curlers and 37 female curlers, totaling 100 active participants, with 4 serving as spares. As of 2024, the league has grown to 122 curlers and continues to expand.

The 266 Stick Curling League has blossomed into more than just a competitive arena; it has become a vibrant community. From its humble beginnings, it has evolved into a hub where camaraderie, sportsmanship, and community spirit thrive.

In 2012, the Highland Curling Club was honored to be awarded the Canadian Championship, with George and Gord having the honor of serving as coordinators for the event. Additionally, George Achtymichuk and Bill Martin were proud members of Harvey Mazinke’s team, which won the Brier in 1973.

What started as a small group of enthusiasts with a passion for curling has grown into a large, welcoming family. New members have continually infused the club with energy and enthusiasm, contributing to its dynamic culture and enduring spirit.

The league has become a place where laughter resonates across the rink, victories are celebrated with joy, and support for one another is unwavering. Friendships formed on the ice extend into everyday life, creating a strong, interconnected community.

As the 266 Stick Curling League continues to grow, it stands as a testament to the power of community and the enduring bonds forged through a shared love for curling. It is more than just a place to play; it is a cherished home for all who step onto its ice.
